Tribes Have GOAL of Stopping Bear De-List

A coordinated group of American Indian tribal leaders have entered onto the debate on removing the Grizzly Bear from the Endangered Species List.
The group Guardians of Our Ancestors’ Legacy, also known as GOAL, sent letters to US Fish And Wildlife director Daniel Ashe outlining their opposition to de-listing.

Among issues brought forward by the group, which consists of tribal leaders from eleven tribes in Wyoming, Idaho, South Dakota, North Dakota and Oklahoma, is one of the cultural and spiritual significance of the bear in tribal traditions. The tribes say that the agency is required by law to consult with them before any changes to the law are made.
The FWS is expected to take action on the ESA this year possibly returning management to the states and allowing for potential trophy hunting of grizzlies in Wyoming.
